Blepharitis

Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelid margins that can lead to chronic irritation, redness, crusting along the lashes, and tear film instability.

Blepharitis is often multifactorial and may be associated with:

• Bacterial overgrowth
• Meibomian gland dysfunction
• Ocular rosacea
• Underlying skin conditions
• Demodex mites, which reside at the base of the eyelashes and, when overpopulated, can contribute to itching, lash debris (collarettes), recurrent styes, and persistent inflammation

When Demodex involvement is identified, targeted prescription treatment such as XDEMVY may be recommended.

Management is guided by your specific findings and may include:

• Lid hygiene to reduce debris and bacterial load
• Prescription therapy when indicated
• Gland-directed treatments to improve oil flow
• Targeted biofilm removal at the lid margin
