Contact Lenses

Do you need vision correction but don’t want to wear eyeglasses full time?

Contact lenses offer a great option for most patients and can provide many advantages to the patient including a glass free look, allowing a natural field of vision, and reducing distortions. Unlike glasses they do not fog up, they are great for sports, physical activities, and wearing non-prescription sunglasses. With certain high prescriptions, contact lenses may offer more enhanced, cleared vision.

There are various kinds of contact lenses available, the majority of which fall within two main categories, so it is important to know the choices available.

Soft Lenses

Soft daily-wear lenses that are replaced on a planned schedule, most often daily, biweekly, monthly, or quarterly – all depending on the lens that you are fit in.  These lenses are available in most prescriptions, and with the introduction of new materials on the market (like Silicone Hydrogel), they allow for more oxygen permeability to the eye, making them more comfortable to wear and good for overall eye health.

Rigid Gas-Permeable (RGP)

These lenses are made of slightly flexible plastics that allow oxygen to pass through to the eyes. RGP Lenses offer excellent vision, are available in most prescriptions, and can be easier to handle, although they do require a longer adaptation period and consistent wear to maintain adaptation and comfort.

With advancements in technology, both soft and RGP lenses are available in Multifocal lens designs, and offer patients both distance and near vision correction, much like a pair of bifocal glasses.

After your comprehensive eye exam, Dr. Thobani, can recommend the best contact lens options for you based on your individual lifestyle and visual needs. Regardless of the type of contact lenses you wear, an annual eye exam is recommended to ensure the continued good health of your eyes. Schedule an appointment for a contact lens evaluation today.
