Cataracts
Cataracts are a universal aging change of the natural lens in the eye.
The lens of a normal eye is clear when we are born, but with aging, it gradually becomes more cloudy, creating a more progressive blurring or diming of vision. Other symptoms of cataracts include greater sensitivity to glare and light, yellowing of colors, needing brighter light for reading, difficulty with night driving and seeing rings/halos around lights.
During the early stages of the disease, the changes in vision associated with cataracts can often be addressed by using prescription glasses. When this strategy to clear your vision is no longer working, surgery is often the next step. Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgery in the United States. During cataract surgery, the natural lens is replaced with a man-made lens (intra-ocular lens implant or IOL).
